GUSTAV G. KLUTSIS (1895-1944) [CIVILIZED LIFE / PRODUCTIVE WORK.] 1932.
56x39 1/4 inches. Ogiz-Izogiz, Moscow.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image; minor loss and paint in bottom margin; vertical folds. Two sheets. Framed.
This rare poster is rather unusual in Klutsis' work. Acclaimed for his spatial constructions and photomontages, he was a master at representing crowds of people in highly complex, multi-layered and multi-visual images. By contrast, here we have only a single workman's face in the forefront with a vision of Stalin's ideal, "cultured" paradise of comfortable neighborhoods in the background. It is clearer and stronger than most of his images, designed without the massive additions of additional imagery so prevalent in many of his other posters. Also the colors are different for Klutsis, as the image is basically bereft of red, being composed of yellow and blues. Klutsis 261, Art and Power p. 218.
